Glossary of Terms

 

 

As with any specialized field of interest, fishing has plenty of lingo that can be confusing to a newcomer. Add to that all the geographical abbreviations and it's pretty easy to get confused. Here's a list of terms and definitions. Feel free to email me or post on the forum if you have additions, suggestions or corrections.

Catch and release
Dead Stick
A baited rod which is unattended. Similar in purpose to a Tip-Up.
Drag
The amount of tension required to pull line from a reel. If the drag is set too loose, it will take forever to land a fish. If it's too tight, a large fish can break your line.
Flag
Literally, the bright material on a tip-up. A yell of "Flag!" is often used to refer to a strike on a tip-up.
Flasher
Nope, it's not a creep in a raincoat. A flasher refers to a sonar device used as a depth finder and fish finder, usually for ice fishing. Vexilar and Marcum are common brands of flasher
Forks, the
While there are many forks, THE Forks generally refers to the confluence of the Old Man and Bow Rivers to form the South Saskatchewan River
Gator
A large northern pike
Hammer handle
A small, skinny pike.
Hard Water
Ice, duh!

A life jacket, or Personal Flotation Device
Shanty, the
The Ice Shanty Forum

Tip-Up
A type of ice fishing rig which is left unattended. Typically, a tip-up has a small flag of bright orange material which pops up to alert the angler of a strike. There are many different tip-up designs.
